Swedish sci-fi series Real Humans is on at the moment and it’s interesting because its main characters are androids, and it’s also interesting because it’s set, just like Evangeline, in an alternative present day, or perhaps very near future.
There are no cars flying through the sky or wacky sci-fi effects. At heart it’s a drama about outsiders, ‘people’ who have been underestimated, feared, ostracized. And the central theme seems to be the age old one about humanoids – can a machine feel.
This is not the problem of the clone. She feels, just as we do. She is made of the same stuff as we are. She’s just manufactured, not born. The theme of the clone is the same as the theme of those of us who are adopted – if I look exactly the same as you, why am I second-class?
