We’ve got to shoot I am Evangeline fast, we can’t ask people to give up more than 4 weeks of their working year to come and work with us for nix. There’s a way of shooting fast that’s pretty traditional, wide shot, cover the whole action, then jump in for some singles. But again I don’t want it to look like TV. So I’d like to make some bolder choices.
I love the shooting style of Carnal Knowledge. In one scene Candice Bergin is at a bar and listening to two men, both contenders for her, and the shot just stays on her. We hear Art and Jack off-screen, never see them, and she turns her head as if she’s in a tennis match, and her face tells the whole story. It’s very strong. But I wonder if Nicholls shot this in a traditional way and then cut it differently later, or if he always intended it to be like this? If you don’t have the coverage of course you can’t ‘fix it in post.’ So it’s riskier, but probably like most things, returns more if you get it right.
