We shot the bulk of the teaser on the last day of a long string of 30-plus days in late summer. The film itself is set in mid-winter, all blacks and greys and dour wintery skies and here it was, mid-thirties, sun beating down, and probably over 40 in our beach bathing box location. We almost melted. I’m relying on sound and a severe grade to sell the idea of winter! Despite the weather it was a fantastic experience for a number of reasons. Firstly, for figuring out some of our trickier shots (or not figuring them out). Secondly, for working at the kind of pace that we will need to maintain for four weeks, and thirdly and perhaps most importantly, for a true and wonderful feeling of having actually started. Pre-production is so much necessary planning, but it’s so much more satisfying when things finally come off the page and into ‘reality’.
