Visiting the stunning MONA in Tasmania recently I was abruptly reminded of how powerful it is when people trust their own gut, and produce something that is reflection of their deep selves, not something born out of a committee. Committees strangle originality. In having to please a lot of people you please no one. It takes courage to say ‘this is what I like, this is me, take it or fucking leave it.’ But really, that is the only way a piece of work will ever cut through in our incredibly media saturated world. You have to believe that what you love, some other weirdo will as well, and judging by the numbers at MONA, it’s working for him.
